Laser Surgery
Laser Surgery is a medical procedure that involves the use of a light beam that can be precisely focused. It is used to treat tissues by heating the targeted cells until they disintegrate.
The types of laser used include the carbon dioxide laser, the YAG (yttrium aluminum garnet) laser, and the pulsed dye laser each of target specific conditions. The color of the light beam used is directly related to the type of surgery being performed and the color of the tissue being treated.
Laser treatments can be used in the removal of tumors from the liver and brain with minimal damage to the surrounding healthy tissue and with minimal or no scarring.
Laser Surgery is used to seal small blood vessels to reduce blood loss and to seal lymph vessels to reduce swelling and to help prevent the spreading of tumor cells. Laser treatment is also used to seal nerve endings to reduce postoperative pain.
Cosmetic laser procedures are used for aesthetic reasons in place of natural makeup for the removal of unwanted hair warts, moles, and tattoos and to reduce the appearance of skin wrinkles, scars, and other skin blemishes due to the aging process.
As with any type of surgery, laser treatment has it’s risks. Possible problems include incomplete treatment, some form of discomfort, infection, bleeding, scarring, and skin discoloration.
The risks to using laser should be weighed up before seriously considering the option if it is cosmetic surgery. Some Laser Surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and the results and recovery period vary significantly with each patient and the condition being treated.
